LATE SEPTEMBER UPDATE

Hello Again,

It's been a very busy month and a half. For starters, I finally hopped on the social media bandwagon that I'd long been avoiding (fear, really) & created accounts for both TWITTER and INSTAGRAM. My handle is the same for both if you want to check out my posts:

For September, I set up a challenge for myself: a Sketch a Day for 30 days. The results are posted in both places, and I am largely happy with them. However, it taught me that trying to keep pace with something like that is very hard work; Even pulling from earlier sketches that had been laying about. The routine is good, great practice to help build discipline... but nevertheless, time consuming!

Moving forward, my plan is to only post one or two a week. This way, I can actually work on spending more time with them, so that they are truly special – and I am proud to post them.

On the graphic novel/comic front, I am still rough drafting a new work (which has the potential to become a series, but I don't want to get ahead of myself just yet – it's so tempting, though) & as soon as it is at a more defined state of existence, I shall make an official announcement... with preliminary sketches :)

Best Always,

V.

SEASONS CHANGE

Hello, Strangers :)

So much has happened since my post!

First of all, the FLAME CON Event was a great success - so much fun. Lots of enthusiastic LGBTQ comic fans packed the gilded walls of Brooklyn's Grand Prospect Hall.

It was great exposure for my work. Lots of people to stopped to browse through copies of "Dorian", "Summer Boys" and the "Hold On/Let Go" (Illustrated Gay Erotica) collection I created under the nom de plume: Logan Finch.

My understanding is that the POWER ANTHOLOGY (published by our hosts, GEEKS OUT) did well also. The short piece I submitted, "White Russian Roulette" looked very good in print. I am now making it available to anyone who wants to read by clicking the link below [...and I encourage you to check out the full collection, featuring lots of other great work by a host of talented creators; available at Midtown Comics: http://www.midtowncomics.com/store/dp.asp?PRID=Geeks+Out+Presents+Power+_1463025]

Unfortunately, things were not going well with "The Champion of Clarendon Ditch" comic series and the project was aborted halfway through the first issue. With permission from the author (Matt Galeone) and editor (Beth Williams), I am also posting the work that I contributed as it will now serve to be "Portfolio Material".

Here are a few screen shots:

Half of July was taken up with travel: a much needed getaway touring the Mediterranean. I was immersed in inspiring sights. Many photos and extensive journal entries were made. I have begun digitally sketching out some of them and will begin posting more shortly. For a taste, here's one of a tile mosaic made by Gaudi that I saw in Barcelona.

...'til next time!

"CHAMPION" UPDATE: THE CREATIVE PROCESS

The past two months have been extremely busy between getting the first issue of “The Champion of Clardendon Ditch” comic book/graphic novelization ready as well as preparing for FLAME CON in June. Attached is a sneak peek at one of the characters in the series.

As an artist who has worked solo more often than not, collaboration can be a paralyzing prospect. Creation is a battle. Chiefly with oneself. God, The Muse, or whatever term we wish to give “The Source” of our imagination presents to us a pure (that is to say Perfect) vision of what it would have us realize and our job is to translate. So begins the daunting task of bringing it into existence. It’s hard. The hours are long, the mistakes are many.

Learning to separate oneself from one’s work is my lesson. I am not the illustrations that I draw. The words I’ve read which inspired the visions, were - in turn - written by an author who was translating them from his own “Source”. Perfection is always an unrealistic goal, and yet "Very Good" - even "Great" work is possible when we, as collaborative artists learn to speak: The Language of Our Project.

How is this done? Like most things: Trial and Error. Submission, Rejection, Revision. Sometimes words are inadequate, but a picture does the trick. How lucky are we to live in an age where the Internet has a virtually endless database of images to pull for inspirational essence. Sometimes pictures don’t work and one instead needs to rely on a thousand words. Either way: one is learning to communicate, and in the process of doing so, one is really learning to let go. Separating "The Source" from "The Work". It begins to stand on its own. Soon it will take to the sky.

                                                                              * * *

My immense gratitude to author Matt Galeone and editor Beth Williams for the opportunity to work on this exciting project that already feels like a great success.

Stay tuned for the next update!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! BIG CHANGES ARE UNDERWAY

Hello Again,

I'm very excited for an upcoming announcement that should be made by this time next week.

Until then, I have a new online platform to showcase my work. For years I have been visiting other artists DEVIANT-ART pages but never thought to make my own.

I also created a Professional Facebook page to link up the various forums I use (including this one) to keep anyone interested in my work up to date on what is going on.
