Thankfully, as the saying goes: "It's never too late" (well, usually), so here I am. Vernon Bauer, Independent Animator. Now blogging about my work.
I won't go into extensive detail at this time (...or any other, most likely) about my history of love for the craft of animation. Suffice it to say, I was always interested, but life took me down different paths, many of which have been very useful now that I am redirecting my life towards what it is that I really want to do.
I went back to school about three years ago to NYU for courses in animation. In early 2011, I began experimenting with my own short cartoon creations & posting them online. Response was generally positive, so in January 2012, I set the bar a little higher for myself: to create a longer film.
I chose to make an adaptation of Oscar Wilde's classic novella, "The Picture of Dorian Gray", modernized & set in present day New York City. Knowing that it would be a huge time and energy commitment, I picked this work because my love of the timeless tale goes back many years & I knew that if anything could hold my interest for a year (or more), it would be this.
By January of this year, after squeezing in many hours of animating after work in my old office job & on weekends, I was nearly done with the film. Still, I needed to be able to give it (& my new career) my full attention. I ran a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds, which combined with my own savings allowed me to leave my office & embark on this exciting new adventure.
The film is finished & will be released soon, and I have already begun preparations for my next big animation project.
